The Survey Process
The Commissioning Brief - It is helpful to discuss with the client the nature of the brief and to ascertain at this stage the likely outputs and deliverables that the client requires. Scan to Plan can then determine which are the most appropriate survey techniques, instruments and technologies to use for the commission.
The Survey - All of the survey techniques are non-intrusive and no permanent survey markers need remain on site unless specifically required by the client.
Depending on the scan resolution required and the area covered by the scan project the survey time on site can range from half a day up to a week or more for larger projects. GPS equipment is also used on site to geo-reference the project.
Processing - The data created from the scan stations on site are ‘knitted’ together in what is known as the registration process. This allows a three-dimensional point cloud model of the entire project to be formed.
Methods of Data Capture
Once the registration process is complete then a number of potential outputs and deliverables can be produced:
• A published version of the laser scan software that can be used independently and free of charge by the client. This is essentially an interactive scan viewer which enables the client to analyse and annotate each scan and generate point clouds. These can be exported to AutoCAD and other design packages.
• High resolution and accurately scaled two-dimensional ‘tifs’ can be created for the client so that conventional two-dimensional scaled plans, sections and elevation drawings can be produced.
• Monitoring the potential movement of buildings and geology.
• Working closely with the client to use the published version as the hub for a Health and Safety file as defined under the CDM regulations for civil engineering projects.
Scan to PLAN uses the best method of data capture for the Client's needs from an array of services and equipment. 3D Point clouds can be generated and combined from a variety of data capture methods including aerial, terrestrial & underwater.
Aerial - Fixed wing and multi-rotor UAV's are ideal for capturing large areas of data to an accuracy of less than +or- 5cm in the vertical.
Multi-rotor AUV's are well suited to fly over and around buildings and other vertical features as in this example of Blaise Castle, Bristol below, a dataset captured by Future Aerial Innovations.
Terrestrial –Laser scanning technology can to employed to capture in very great detail internal and external features of buildings and structures.
Underwater – Multi- bean sonar can be used to undertake bathymetric surveys.
All three methods of data capture can generate a three dimensional point cloud.
